That old concert tee you refuse to get rid of? Bring it.
The flannel that's seen better days? Yep.
Corduroy pants. Denim. Patches. Weird fabric. Funky buttons. A shirt with an amazing graphic. Something textured. Something sentimental. Something you found buried in the back of a closet and immediately thought you could make something from it...
BRING. IT.
In this workshop, we're turning old clothes, favorite fabrics and unexpected materials into a completely original upcycled tote bag.
We'll start by looking at what everyone brought and figuring out how to use the best parts.
Maybe the graphic from your concert tee becomes the focal point.
Maybe that corduroy becomes a pocket.
Maybe we're layering flannel, exposing seams, adding raw edges, piecing together different textures or sewing on a completely unnecessary number of funky buttons.
Then we'll teach you some rad decorative stitching and construction techniques to make the whole thing look intentionally designed—not just recycled.
Sewcial will have additional fabrics, trims and materials available so you can mix, layer, embellish and experiment.
The more texture you bring, the more interesting this gets.
We'll give you the basic construction plan for the tote.
You make the design decisions.
This is your chance to work a little more like you're in a fashion design studio: choose your materials, play with composition, figure out what works together, experiment with stitching and turn a pile of completely unrelated things into something that somehow just WORKS.
Every tote should leave Sewcial looking different.
Actually, if two of them look exactly alike, we have questions.
Raid your closet, your family's closet—with permission, obviously—or the thrift store.
Bring a few things to play with, like:
Old concert or graphic tees
Flannel shirts
Denim or corduroy pants
Interesting woven fabrics
Patches
Funky buttons
Clothing with cool pockets, labels or details
Fabric with great texture, color or sentimental value
Don't overthink it. Bring options. We'll help you figure out what's worth cutting up once you get here.
Sewcial will provide the additional construction materials and a stash of extras to help pull your design together.
