SEWCIAL™ is a bright, high-energy sewing and creative studio in Sacramento where beginners come to try things they didn't think they could do.
We're part sewing studio, part creative playground, part neighborhood gathering place—and we're always interested in meeting exceptional people who might be a great fit for our team.
Our instructors and studio assistants work with kids, teens and adults in sewing classes, camps, parties, workshops and special events. Some days you'll be teaching. Some days you'll be assisting another instructor. Some days you'll be prepping a ridiculous number of tiny pieces of fabric.
We care less about having the fanciest sewing résumé and much more about finding people who are reliable, encouraging, creative, coachable and really good humans to have in a room.
This is not a traditional sewing-store job.
Our classes are social, fast-moving and intentionally beginner-friendly. Students come here because they want to learn something new without feeling intimidated, judged or overwhelmed.
We do a LOT of prep behind the scenes so students can walk in, try something that looks impressive, and experience an immediate win.
Our job is to make that happen.
You'll encourage nervous beginners. Troubleshoot wonky stitches. Help a kid recover from sewing something completely backwards. Reset rooms. Sell tools from the Handcrafted Marketplace. Prep projects. Sweep floors. Answer questions. Find missing scissors. Clean things you did not personally make dirty.
And sometimes you'll teach a room full of people and think:
That was ridiculously fun.
That's the job.
You're warm, encouraging and genuinely enjoy helping people succeed.
You're comfortable working with a variety of kids, teens and adults and their unique learning and energy types.
You are a multi-tasker (when we teach, we are often scanning for safety while giving instruction, being a cheerleader for another, and troubleshooting a machine simulteneously)
You're creative and like making things.
You're dependable. If you're on the calendar, we can count on you.
You notice what needs to be done, use good judgment and jump in without needing constant direction.
You can take the lead when assigned and are equally happy supporting another instructor when that's your role for the day.
You have ideas—and also understand that not every idea becomes a Sewcial class or program.
You know when to take initiative, when to ask a question and when to follow an established studio procedure.
You can receive feedback, make an adjustment and keep moving.
You don't need to be the center of attention to be an important part of the team.
You're willing to learn the Sewcial way of teaching and promoting classes and merchandise, even if you already know how to sew.
You're comfortable helping with retail sales, class prep, cleaning, resets and the less-glamorous parts of running a studio.
You understand that being part of a small business means everyone helps keep the place running and that our neighborhood and community is what keeps us successful.
We want people with personality. We want creativity. We want ideas.
We also need people who understand the difference between bringing something great to Sewcial and needing to run Sewcial.
Nope.
Sewing experience is definitely helpful, and some positions or class assignments require more technical skill than others. But we can teach sewing skills.
It's much harder to teach someone to be dependable, encouraging, observant, resourceful and great with people.
If you already have skills in garment sewing, quilting, alterations, patternmaking, embroidery, textile arts, crafts or other creative areas, we'd love to hear about them.
But technical expertise doesn't automatically make someone a great Sewcial instructor.
How you teach matters here just as much as what you know.
Our instructional staff doesn't operate on a traditional hierarchy.
Depending on the class, you may lead, co-teach or support another instructor.
For multi-instructor classes, one instructor may be assigned to manage overall class flow, pacing and transitions while another provides individual or technical support. Those assignments are based on the needs of that particular class.
Everyone brings different strengths.
As you learn our studio, you'll gradually take on more responsibility based on demonstrated readiness, judgment and experience. Its an expectation and not a measure of merit.
This one is important.
SEWCIAL is a very part-time workplace, and we offer significant scheduling flexibility. Our staff includes students and people with other jobs, businesses, families and commitments.
But flexibility does not mean unlimited availability.
Our business operates when our customers are available—and that includes evenings, weekends and school breaks.
School breaks are active programming periods at Sewcial. We may offer camps, workshops, parties and additional daytime programming during:
SCUSD Fall break
SCUSD Thanksgiving break/programming periods
SCUSD Winter break
SCUSD Spring break
SCUSD Summer break
We do not work on holidays and typically will close during an extended weekend.
Staff are expected to maintain reasonable availability during school-break programming periods as part of their regular availability for this position.
That does not mean you will work every day of every school break. We may not program every break or every available day, and if Sewcial doesn't schedule programming, you're obviously off the hook.
It also doesn't mean employees can't request time away or make plans.
It DOES mean that if your personal schedule generally requires you to be unavailable for most or all school breaks, this position is probably not the right fit.
We intentionally keep a small team. We are not looking to maintain a large roster of employees simply so someone happens to be available during every operating period.
We need our regular team to collectively support the calendar we operate.
We conceptualize and build our class calendar months in advance.
Your availability helps determine what we can offer.
Once we schedule a class based on staff availability, we market it. People register. Families arrange their schedules. Other staff members make plans around it.
That's why reliability is a really big deal here.
We ask staff to keep their availability updated well in advance and communicate changes promptly.
Once you've committed to an assigned class or event, we need to be able to genuinely count on you.
SEWCIAL is silly. It's upbeat. It's colorful. It's busy.
We laugh a lot.
We also take our responsibility to our students, families, coworkers and community seriously.
We expect our team to be welcoming and respectful to everyone who walks through our doors. Our staff represents Sewcial while working in the studio, at events and when interacting with our customers, and are good stewards within our community.
Our Marketplace isn't a traditional retail store.
It's an extension of our classroom.
We carry tools, supplies and products that help beginners continue learning after class. Staff help customers understand what products do, where they've used them in class and what they might want to try next.
You don't have to arrive knowing every product.
We'll teach you.
But everyone on our team should eventually be comfortable helping customers, completing sales and supporting the Marketplace experience.
Creative studios don't magically reset themselves.
Everyone helps with things like:
Class setup.
Project preparation.
Restocking.
Sweeping.
Dusting.
Cleaning tables.
Organizing supplies.
Marketplace upkeep.
Windows.
Outdoor areas.
Taking out trash.
General studio resets.
Occasionally something gross happens.
We deal with it.
There is no separate magical cleaning fairy hiding in the supply closet.
You don't need to walk in knowing everything.
We'd rather hire someone who says:
“I don't know yet, but I'll figure it out.”
We're looking for people who can eventually be trusted to walk into the studio, understand what needs to happen, take care of our students and customers, solve reasonable problems, follow Sewcial procedures and keep things moving.
Initiative matters here. So does judgment.
The goal is not to create a studio full of identical instructors.
It's to build a team of people we can trust.
Location: SEWCIAL™ — Sacramento, California
Position: Part-Time Studio Instructor & Class Assistant
Schedule: Very part-time and variable. Regular availability must include meaningful overlap with Sewcial programming needs, including evenings, weekends and school-break programming periods.
Hours: Vary based on the class and event calendar. This is not a guaranteed-hours position.
Teaching: Staff may assist, co-teach or independently lead classes based on training, experience and demonstrated readiness.
Training: Provided. Even experienced sewists learn Sewcial's teaching methods, studio procedures and class flow.
Physical Requirements: This is an active studio position that may include standing for extended periods, moving around the classroom, setting up and resetting workspaces, handling supplies and equipment, and routine studio cleaning.
Additional Requirements: Background screening and safety certifications may be required for assigned roles. Sewcial will provide information about applicable requirements during onboarding.
