Turns out, fixing your clothes can be ridiculously satisfying.
In this beginner-friendly class, we're trying Sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique that uses simple, rhythmic hand stitches to reinforce and repair fabric—while making the repair something worth showing off.
Think little rows. Tiny grids. Repeating patterns. Bright thread. It's art AND mending!
We'll slow things down, grab a needle and thread, and learn how to use visible stitching to patch, reinforce and add new life to well-loved fabric. You'll practice several simple Sashiko-inspired patterns and create a mending sampler you can take home and use as inspiration for jeans, jackets, bags and anything else that's earned a battle scar.
No sewing machine. No rushing. No trying to make your stitches invisible.
Just poke, pull, repeat until your brain gets suspiciously quiet.
You'll dabble in hand stitching, patch placement, reinforcing worn fabric, creating simple repeating patterns, and using visible mending as a design feature instead of something to hide.
And don't worry about perfect little stitches. A little wonky is part of the charm around here.
Absolute beginners welcome. You don't need hand-sewing experience, and there's no sewing-machine prerequisite for this one.
We'll provide everything you need to learn and practice, so you don't need to sacrifice your favorite jeans to the sewing gods on your first try.
