A Sewcial Small-Batch Session
You know how to use a sewing machine. Maybe you've even opened a clothing pattern and realized you technically understand the words...you just aren't entirely sure what they're asking you to do.
Or maybe you are exploring the idea of upcycling clothed. Or simply clothing construction curious.
Welcome to Garment Sewing Basics.
This hands-on Stitch Lab is a skills buffet of the techniques that show up again and again when you sew clothing.
Instead of spending the whole class making one garment, we're going SMALL. You'll create a collection of mini sewing samples while we practice common garment-construction methods like darts, gathering, easing, interfacing, facings, understitching, clipping and notching curves, seam finishes, pressing during construction and more (and helping you understand what the heck those even mean).
We'll sew them, look at what they're actually doing, talk about when you'll encounter them, and practice the little methods that clothing instructions have a habit of casually assuming you already know.
We're not making a garment. We're sampling the methods.
You'll leave with your samples as your own mini garment-sewing reference library—and considerably more prepared for the next time a pattern tells you to understitch something and moves right along like that was perfectly self-explanatory.
WHO IT'S FOR
Beginner sewists who already know the basics of operating a sewing machine and are curious about sewing clothing. It's also a great confidence-builder before Pattern Lab—but it is not a prerequisite. If you're ready to jump directly into a garment project, you can absolutely go straight to Pattern Lab and learn techniques as they come up.
PREREQUISITE
Try Sewing or basic sewing experience, or equivalent recent sewing experience.
STUDIO VIBE
Lots of tiny fabric pieces. Lots of experimenting. Lots of “OH—that's what that does.” No fashion-school expectations and no perfect samples required. Just a table full of techniques that make future garment projects make a whole lot more sense.
Want to go from samples to the real thing?
Pattern Lab is our four-week supported sewing experience where you bring your own pattern and work through the actual construction with instructor guidance.
