Stitch Lab: All About Sergers (Overlock Machines)

You’ve seen them. You’ve heard the buzz. But what is a serger, and do you really need one? In this Stitch Lab clinic, we’ll break down everything you need to know about this magical machine. Or, if you already, have one, discover the nuances that will make this machine level up your sewing game .

A serger (also called an overlock machine) is a special type of sewing machine that trims the edge of your fabric and wraps it in thread — all in one pass. The result?

  • Professional-looking seams (like the ones you see inside store-bought clothes).

  • Neat, finished edges that don’t fray.

  • Stretchy stitches that regular sewing machines can’t make.

Think of it as the machine that takes your sewing from “homemade” to “ready-to-wear.”

This is a demo and discovery session designed to build confidence and help you decide if a serger belongs in your sewing journey. Sit back, watch, ask questions, and handle samples — you’ll leave with a clear understanding of what a serger does, how it works, and why sewists love it.

What You’ll Learn

  • How a serger works (and what makes it different from your sewing machine)

  • Threading basics + rethreading without fear (hands-on experience using on of Sewcial's sergers)

  • How to finally understand and adjust tension dials (and why they are so important on Sergers)

  • Common serger stitches: overlock, rolled hems, flatlock, and more

  • When to use multiple needles and how many threads to choose

  • Thread types that work best with sergers

  • Adjusting stitch length for different fabrics

  • The serger knife: what it does and how to manage it

  • Common stitch issues + troubleshooting

  • How to read and understand serger stitch samples

What You’ll Take Home

  • A cheat sheet of stitches, settings, and troubleshooting tips

  • A list of our favorite sergers (brands + models we recommend)

  • The confidence to step into a whole new world of sewing

Important Notes

  • This is a demo-based clinic — not a hands-on sewing class.

  • If time permits, students may try the studio’s serger for a quick sample run at the very end.

  • Prerequisite: Completion of Sewcial's Stitch Lab: Machine Basics or equivalent sewing machine experience.

Studio Vibe: Think of it as “serger show-and-tell” meets troubleshooting bootcamp. You’ll leave with knowledge, samples, and resources — no tangled threads, no frustration, just clarity.
