Pre-Requisites: Stitch Lab: Read Patterns and some previous recent sewing experience
Sewcial Stitch Class Pass Members may use 3 credits for this cohort.
Where confident beginners and returning sewists finally figure out what happened, how to, and what to do next.
Stitch Lab: Methods is a small-group, skill-building lab where sewists learn the methods behind sewing — not just the steps. Each week builds on the last, layering transferable technical skills that show up again and again across garments, bags, quilting, and home projects.
This is not a single-project class, but instead includes short micro-projects like the ones you have seen on YouTube, but then don't quite understand once you sit down at the machine.
It’s a framework for understanding how sewing behaves — so future projects feel logical instead of mysterious.
Learn how accuracy at the machine affects everything that comes after.
We’ll work on:
Seam allowance as a method (not just a number)
Starting, stopping, pivoting, and corners
Pressing as a construction tool
Understanding why projects feel “almost right”
✂️ Goal:
Leave with a clear understanding of how control is built — and how to fix common alignment issues.
This session builds directly on Session 1.
We’ll work on:
Sewing curves without puckers
Gathering vs. easing
Turning and shaping fabric
Tubes and fabric flow
✂️ Goal:
Understand how fabric wants to move — and how to work with it intentionally.
This is where projects start looking polished and intentional.
We’ll work on:
Hem logic (not just hemming everything)
Clean edges and seam finishes
Corners and mitered corners
Reinforcing stress points
✂️ Goal:
Recognize what makes a project look “finished” and how to achieve that consistently.
Everything comes together in this final session.
We’ll work on:
Construction order and why sequence matters
Understanding instructions strategically
Pocket placement and attachment
A friendly introduction to zippers
Troubleshooting by asking “What’s happening here?”
✂️ Goal:
Leave knowing how to approach new projects with confidence and clarity.
Graduates of Try Sewing and/or Machine Basics (or equivalent experience)
Sewists who can sew but want to understand why things work
Anyone who has struggled with consistency or confidence at home
Makers who want skills that transfer across many sewing disciplines
Previous Stitch Lab students ready to level up their understanding
This lab supports (and strengthens) our other Stitch Labs and project-based classes — it does not replace them.
Machine use: Included, or bring your own. (This should not be your first time using a sewing machine. Please take Machine Basics prior to this lab if needed.)
If you’ve been sewing at home and thinking,
“I feel like I should understand this better…”
Stitch Lab: Methods is where everything starts to click.
